The Lucknow Super Giants did not just have a poor IPL 2026 season. They had the kind of season that forces a franchise to sit down afterwards and question almost every major decision it made over the previous two years.

This was supposed to be the beginning of a new era. LSG rebuilt aggressively around Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh after the mega auction, handing Pant the captaincy and spending a record ₹27 crore to bring him in as the face of the project. Instead, the season spiralled almost immediately.

LSG finished bottom of the IPL 2026 table with just 4 wins in 14 matches. They were among the first teams eliminated from playoff contention alongside Mumbai Indians. For a squad packed with international stars and experienced coaching staff, the campaign never found tactical rhythm or emotional stability for long enough stretches.

Now, according to a report by RevSportz, the franchise is preparing for a deep internal review and significant changes could follow, including an expanded role for former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

IPL 2026: Kane Williamson could become more influential inside LSG setup

Kane Williamson joined the franchise ahead of IPL 2026 as a strategic advisor, a role that initially appeared relatively low-profile from the outside. But internally, his influence and standing inside the dressing room seem to have grown quickly.

The RevSportz report states that head coach Justin Langer is now 'on a slippery slope' after the disastrous campaign, and Kane Williamson could emerge as a central figure if the franchise decides to restructure responsibilities.

When LSG appointed Kane Williamson earlier this year, owner Sanjiv Goenka publicly described him as someone with leadership, strategic insight and the ability to inspire players. Those qualities now appear even more valuable after a season where the team often looked emotionally flat and tactically uncertain.

LSG also already have IPL-winning coach Tom Moody as their global director of cricket. But Williamson's age, recent playing experience and reputation among modern cricketers reportedly make him an especially attractive long-term figure inside the setup should the franchise choose to reshape its structure.

Coaching questions begin after another disappointing IPL finish

This was not a one-off bad season. LSG had also finished seventh in IPL 2025 with 12 points from 14 games. That disappointment triggered changes in the coaching group, although Justin Langer and fast-bowling coach Bharat Arun were retained.

Bharat Arun's work is still believed to be highly valued within the franchise. The development of bowlers like Mohsin Khan and Prince Yadav is viewed internally as proof of his impact. Prince's recent India ODI call-up for the Afghanistan series only strengthened that perception.

But the overall results have created pressure on the wider management structure. LSG's performances repeatedly exposed issues in balance, leadership clarity and tactical execution despite possessing one of the most expensive squads in the tournament.

Rishabh Pant's future as LSG captain suddenly looks uncertain

No discussion around LSG's future can avoid the biggest question of all, what happens with Rishabh Pant?

The franchise invested massively in him ahead of IPL 2025, both financially and emotionally. He was meant to become the long-term face of the project. But over two seasons, neither his batting nor the team’s results have fully justified that gamble.

Pant finished IPL 2026 with 312 runs from 13 innings at an average of 28.36 and strike rate of 138.05. There were flashes of his old brilliance, but not enough consistency. His struggles in white-ball cricket have become noticeable enough that he has also lost his place in India's ODI setup.

The RevSportz report stresses that contrary to public speculation, there is no major personal rift between Pant and Sanjiv Goenka. Any future decision regarding Pant’s role as captain or player would reportedly be taken purely from a cricketing perspective rather than emotional fallout.

Still, the pressure around his leadership is now impossible to ignore.

After LSG's final league game against Punjab Kings, Tom Moody openly admitted the franchise would seriously evaluate whether a leadership reset was necessary.

"From a captaincy point of view, he has found it challenging, obviously, and the results reflect that. You do have to wonder whether that pressure is reflected with his performance with the bat." Moody said.

He then added something even more significant.

"Like every department, when you do reflect on a season, we will be making some considered decisions. It certainly looks like we are needing to consider a reset.. Those are not casual end-of-season comments. That is senior management publicly acknowledging that major structural questions are now on the table." Moody concluded.
