Despite Sunrisers Hyderabad crashing out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Heinrich Klaasen’s extraordinary season with the bat will go down as one of the finest campaigns ever produced by a middle-order batter in the tournament’s history.
SRH suffered a disappointing 47-run defeat against Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator clash at New Chandigarh, bringing an end to what had otherwise been a remarkable campaign for the 2016 champions. Hyderabad entered the playoffs as one of the favourites to lift the title, but their journey eventually came to a disappointing end in the knockout stage.
However, Heinrich Klaasen remained one of the biggest positives for SRH throughout the season. He carried Hyderabad’s batting lineup for most parts of the tournament and consistently delivered crucial performances in pressure situations.
Klaasen also held the Orange Cap for a major phase during the first half of the season and continued scoring runs consistently despite batting in the middle order at No. 4.
In 15 matches, Klaasen smashed a blistering 624 runs at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 163. His stunning campaign included six half-centuries along with several match-winning knocks for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
One of his most memorable innings came against Punjab Kings on May 6 when Klaasen hammered 69 runs off 43 deliveries and guided SRH to a strong total against a dangerous Punjab side.
Heinrich Klaasen joins elite IPL record list featuring AB de Villiers, Kane Williamson
With this sensational season, Heinrich Klaasen has now become the second-highest run-scorer among overseas non-openers in a single IPL season, only behind South African legend AB de Villiers.
Most runs by an overseas batter in an IPL season (non-openers)
- AB de Villiers — 687 runs (2016)
- Heinrich Klaasen — 624 runs (2026)*
- Kane Williamson — 622 runs (2018)
- Glenn Maxwell — 552 runs (2014)
- Jos Buttler — 538 runs (2025)
SRH’s brilliant IPL 2026 journey ends in heartbreak
Sunrisers Hyderabad started their IPL 2026 campaign in disappointing fashion after losing three of their first four matches. The absence of regular skipper Pat Cummins during the early phase also turned out to be a massive setback for the side.
However, SRH eventually found momentum after making a few important changes in the bowling department and bringing in fresh faces into the lineup. The changes completely shifted the team’s fortunes as Hyderabad went on to register five consecutive victories and quickly emerged as one of the strongest sides in the tournament.
Despite suffering a few defeats in the middle phase of the season, SRH still managed to finish third on the points table and narrowly missed out on a Qualifier 1 spot.
Their campaign officially came to an end when Rajasthan Royals defeated them in the Eliminator clash at New Chandigarh, ending Hyderabad’s hopes of lifting a second IPL trophy.
