Gujarat Titans won the toss and elected to bowl first in Qualifier 1 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala and the two names conspicuously absent from RCB's starting XI have immediately become the biggest talking points of the evening.
Phil Salt and Romario Shepherd, one a returning injury case and the other a genuine selection call, are both in the dugout rather than on the field as RCB begin their quest to reach back-to-back IPL finals. Here is the full explanation behind both decisions.
IPL 2026: Why Phil Salt is not playing Qualifier 1 in Dharamashla
Salt passed his fitness test in the sense that Rajat Patidar confirmed he is fit, but the team management has made the conservative call not to risk him in a knockout game after a month away from competitive cricket.
The finger injury he sustained against Delhi Capitals on April 18 kept him sidelined for the entire second half of the league stage and while he has been participating in drills and has been cleared by the medical team, the specific concern is match sharpness rather than fitness.
Opening the batting in a playoff game against Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada, the most lethal powerplay bowling combination in IPL 2026, without having faced high-pace live bowling in a match scenario for over a month is a significant risk.
Venkatesh Iyer, who has been in excellent form since coming into the side and made 73 not out against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala of all places, retains his opening spot alongside Virat Kohli as the safer and more form-based choice. Salt is available as an Impact Player option if needed.
RCB vs GT Qualifier 1: Why Romario Shepherd is not starting
Shepherd's absence from the starting XI is a tactical decision built around the Impact Player system and the fact that RCB have been put in to bat first. Starting Shepherd in the main XI when batting first would have committed his overseas slot before the innings began and significantly reduced RCB's strategic flexibility for the crucial final phase.
By keeping him on the bench, RCB can assess exactly what they need, if the batting collapses and they need an explosive lower-order burst, Shepherd comes in as the batting Impact Player in the final four overs.
If the innings goes well and the bowling needs reinforcement, Suyash Sharma is the spinning alternative. The decision also allowed RCB to pack Tim David into the starting XI alongside Josh Hazlewood, maximising both their batting firepower at the top of the order and their primary wicket-taking threat with the ball. Starting Shepherd as well would have forced one of those two out of the XI.
RCB vs GT Qualifier 1: The historic occasion and what is at stake
This is the first time Gujarat Titans have ever played at Dharamsala, not just in this season but in any game in their franchise history. It is also the first time RCB and GT have met in the IPL playoffs despite both teams being successful enough to make the top four regularly since GT's inception in 2022.
Shubman Gill spoke about his personal history at the ground, playing here during India's Under-14 and Under-16 days, and called it one of the prettiest grounds in the world. GT have made one change with Kulwant Khejroliya coming in for Arshad Khan.
