Mumbai Indians ended their four-match losing run with a dominant 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans on Monday, April 20. With two big points, Mumbai took a notable jump in the IPL 2026 points table, surpassing rivals CSK and KKR.

Tilak Varma recorded his maiden IPL century to take MI to a fighting total of 199 while batting first at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Then Ashwani Kumar, playing his first game of the season, took a four-fer to give the five-time champions their second win of the season.

A big win also lifted the Mumbai Indians from the bottom of the points table and boosted their net run rate from -1.076 to +0.067. Mumbai overtook KKR, LSG, and CSK to jump to seventh in the points table.

On the other hand, the Gujarat Titans remained in sixth position with six points from six games, but their net run rate took a big hit, slipping to -0.821.

Unbeaten Punjab Kings remain at the top with nine points in six matches. Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals occupy the next two places with eight points each after losing their last respective games.

Meanwhile, after Mumbai's win, Kolkata Knight Riders returned to their bottom spot with just one win in seven games in the updated IPL 2026 points table.

Mumbai Indians eye comeback in IPL 2026 playoff race

Mumbai Indians began their campaign with a big win over KKR, but went on a four-match losing streak. Emulating their start last year, which saw one defeat in five opening games, MI won their second game in six matches to return to winning ways.

With two wins in six matches, the road to the playoffs looks impossible, but not for the five-time IPL champions. Mumbai have managed to pull off impressive comebacks throughout their history and will look at their 2025 memories to add another memorable campaign this season.

Last year, Mumbai finished fourth in the points table after winning just one of the opening five games. They are on the same path this season, and their latest win against Gujarat Titans will boost their morale in the upcoming games.

Last year's runners-up, Punjab Kings, are all but confirmed to secure the playoffs, and RCB and RR are also looking strong to make the top four this season. SRH, DC and GT are fighting for the fourth spot with six points each, making Mumbai Indians' pay for their early struggles this season.
