Mumbai Indians players walked out wearing black armbands during their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, which left many fans on social media wondering about the reason behind the gesture.

However, soon after the match began, the franchise issued a clarification on social media explaining reason behind it.

In a post on X, MI explained that their players were wearing black armbands as a mark of respect following the untimely demise of a member of their support staff’s daughter, expressing remembrance and standing in solidarity with the grieving family.

“Due to the untimely demise of our support staff’s daughter, Mumbai Indians players are wearing a black armband today, in remembrance of her and in solidarity with the family.”

MI off to a flying start in a crucial clash

In what is a must-win clash for the five-time champions,MI opted to bat first after winning the toss, a slightly surprising call at the Wankhede Stadium. However, the move has worked in their favour so far.

The new opening combination of Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks came out with intent and played aggressively in the powerplay, putting pressure on the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers right from the start. The duo finding boundaries regularly and maintaining a strong scoring rate.
