Ruturaj Gaikwad’s misery with the bat does not seem to be fading away as the flop show continued against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026. The Chennai Super Kings skipper has been dealing with continuous low scores this season and once again failed to deliver at the top.
Ruturaj Gaikwad struggles again vs KKR
Gaikwad once again opened the innings alongside Sanju Samson. With the pressure of providing a flying start, Samson looked in great touch from the very beginning, but Gaikwad struggled to find any rhythm.
During his brief six ball stay, he never looked settled and eventually fell while attempting a slog sweep. The delivery was too full to get under, and he ended up picking out Rovman Powell at deep mid-wicket, who completed a good running catch.
So far in IPL 2026, Gaikwad has managed to score just 63 runs in five matches with a poor average of 12.60. His highest score this season is only 28. As the tournament is progressing and CSK are aiming to stay alive in the race, his batting form needs to improve quickly as the responsibility on him continues to grow.
With CSK’s inconsistent run in the tournament, the pressure has clearly mounted on their skipper to lead from the front. His early dismissal once again left the side in a tricky position despite a positive start from the other end.
Bright powerplay despite early setback
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings started really well in the powerplay despite losing their captain early. Sanju Samson once again showed his class with the bat, beginning the innings with three consecutive boundaries and keeping the momentum intact.
He was well supported by Ayush Mhatre, who played a brilliant knock of 38 runs in just 17 deliveries. The youngster attacked the bowlers with confidence and ensured CSK kept the scoreboard ticking at a strong pace.
By the end of the powerplay, CSK had raced to 72 for the loss of two wickets. Although Mhatre departed soon after, he had already provided a solid platform for the team to push towards a big total.

If Dhoni comes back in next match, Ruturaj Gaikwad should sitout and Ayush Mhatre should open with Sanju Samson.
