Cricket Australia announces central contracts with eye on India tour; CSK star dropped

Cricket Australia have released their central contract list for 2026-27 and the selections tell you everything you need to know about where Australian cricket is headed over the next twelve months. With a five-Test tour of India looming early next year and a schedule that includes fifteen Tests across multiple continents, the selectors have gone heavily in favour of Test and multi-format players, handing out just 21 of the 24 available contracts and leaving some notable names without a deal. The new faces and return of four players The four players coming into the Australia contract list this cycle are Todd Murphy, Brendan Doggett, Jake Weatherald and Michael Neser. Murphy's inclusion is the most significant and the most telling, with Nathan Lyon, now 38, still working his way back from hamstring surgery sustained during the home Ashes, Australia need spin depth and they need it urgently ahead of the India tour. Murphy has played seven Tests and was back with the squad against England but was overlooked in Melbourne and controversially in Sydney, which made his absence from last year's list a surprise. He is back now and the five-Test series in India will almost certainly be his biggest opportunity yet. Doggett gets his first full contract after earning his stripes, Weatherald keeps the deal he earned during the Ashes despite finishing the series with 201 runs at 22.33, and Neser returns after a solid home summer. The omissions, including that of CSK's IPL 2026 signing, raised eyebrows Jhye Richardson's removal from the list is the most surprising call in this cycle. He had worked his way back to the Test side after a long rehabilitation from shoulder surgery, playing at the MCG against England, and many had expected him to hold onto his contract. CA selector George Bailey acknowledged that Richardson could still feature later in the year, suggesting the door is not fully closed. Lance Morris loses his deal after being sidelined since August last year following another stress fracture in his back. Sam Konstas was expected to lose his contract after losing his Test place following the West Indies tour mid-year, and Glenn Maxwell's omission was no surprise given he is now a single-format player and this cycle is almost entirely Test-focused. Usman Khawaja's absence is simply due to retirement. CSK's new signing for IPL 2026, Matt Short, and Matt Renshaw, who averaged 49.90 in the Shield season, also missed out despite strong domestic form. Two Tests at home against Bangladesh, three away in South Africa, four at home against New Zealand, five in India, the 150th anniversary Test at the MCG, a possible World Test Championship final and then the start of the 2027 Ashes away in England. Fifteen Tests across vastly different conditions on multiple continents. Bailey was candid about the thinking behind the list, saying the next twelve months encompass a busy Test schedule across a range of conditions and challenges, and that the predominance of Test and multi-format players in this cycle directly reflects that reality. The smaller list of 21 also allows CA to redistribute funds to top-end players at a time when keeping their best cricketers away from franchise leagues is becoming an increasingly pressing concern.
