Italy suffered an early setback on their T20 World Cup debut as captain Wayne Madsen was forced off the field just four overs into the match after sustaining a shoulder dislocation during their Group C clash against Scotland at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday.

Ian Bishop, reporting from the sidelines after speaking with coaches in the Italy dugout, confirmed that Madsen had dislocated his shoulder and would take no further part in the game. The blow is particularly significant for Italy, given Madsen’s experience and the fact that the skipper is 42 years old.

The experienced skipper, playing his first ICC tournament for Italy, went down in visible pain while attempting a diving stop in the field. Madsen seemed to have twisted his arm awkwardly during the effort and immediately signalled discomfort.

Medical staff rushed onto the field, and the extent of the injury was clear from Madsen’s expression. The physio quickly placed his arm in a sling before escorting him off the ground, raising concerns of a possible shoulder dislocation.

The incident came shortly after Italy had won the toss and elected to bowl first, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a landmark day for Italian cricket.
