Chennai Super Kings kept their IPL 2026 campaign alive with a clinical eight-wicket win over the Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Mumbai Indians batting struggles despite Naman Dhir’s effort

After winning the toss, captain Hardik Pandya once again chose to bat first, repeating the same decision from their previous game. The result remained unchanged as the batting unit failed to deliver.

Mumbai suffered an early setback when Will Jacks departed with the score at just one run. Ryan Rickelton then provided some momentum alongside Naman Dhir as the duo stitched together a 58-run partnership.

Dhir was the standout performer, scoring a fluent 57, while Rickelton chipped in with a quick 37. Suryakumar Yadav once again failed to convert his start, managing 21 runs, extending his lean run.

The biggest concern, though, was skipper Hardik Pandya’s knock. He struggled throughout his innings and scored just 18 off 23 deliveries, unable to find timing or fluency. His sluggish approach drew criticism as MI lost momentum in the latter half of the innings.

Eventually, Mumbai posted 159 for 7 in their 20 overs, a total that always looked slightly below par.

Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad lead bowling effort

It was a disciplined bowling performance from CSK. Anshul Kamboj was the standout performer, picking up three wickets and applying pressure at crucial moments.

Noor Ahmad was equally impressive on a slow surface, finishing with two wickets for just 26 runs. His control in the middle overs made a significant difference. Support came from Ramakrishna Ghosh and Jamie Overton, who picked up one wicket each.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma guide Chennai Super Kings home

Chasing 160, Chennai got off to a steady start but lost Sanju Samson early for 11. From there, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad took charge of the innings.

Gaikwad continued his good form, scoring an unbeaten 67 off 48 deliveries, registering back-to-back half-centuries. He was well supported by Urvil Patel, who added a quick 24.

The finishing touch came from Kartik Sharma, who finally made an impact with the bat. He remained unbeaten on 54 and ensured there were no late hiccups as Chennai chased down the target with nine balls to spare.

MI’s journey almost over, CSK well and truly alive

With this defeat, Mumbai Indians have now registered their seventh loss of the season. While they are not officially out, their chances of progressing further look very slim.

On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings have climbed to sixth place and kept their playoff hopes alive. With momentum on their side, they will look to build on this performance in the remaining matches of the tournament.
