NEW DELHI: Indian star all-rounder Axar Patel has revealed how a timely piece of advice from MS Dhoni played a huge role in shaping his career at the international level.

Axar is now an integral part of India’s setup across formats. Known for his tight line and length with left arm spin Axar also contributes handy runs down the order. Over the years he has proved his value for India on multiple occasions especially in pressure situations.

A moment of honesty with Dhoni

As quoted by ESPN Cricinfo Axar spoke about a phase when he felt he was not doing justice to his ability especially with the bat. He admitted that the feeling of needing to prove himself was constantly playing on his mind.

“I said that I have not been able to prove myself exactly what I can do especially in batting more than bowling. You have seen me for a long time. What can I do?”

Dhoni’s blunt reminder

Dhoni responded by taking Axar back to his early days in international cricket. He reminded him of how fear had slowly crept into his game after a few early dismissals.

“When you came in you were 19 years old. A few times you were out early facing yorkers. I remember watching you get lbw early on to a ball from Dale Steyn that cut in during a 2015 ODI.”

Learning to let go of pressure

Axar further recalled how Dhoni explained the difference in his mindset between domestic cricket IPL and international matches.

“All these things are not leaving your mind. At times you get out to a good ball but you stay stuck thinking about those failures. When you go to the IPL where you have made runs you never think like that. But when you return to internationals you start thinking that you have to prove something.”

Dhoni also warned Axar against carrying the burden of labels and expectations.

“Do not play with the thought that if I get out I will be a failure because I am an all rounder. Thinking like that only adds pressure.”
