Sunrisers Hyderabad have been hit with another setback in IPL 2026, as left-arm seamer David Payne has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury.
The 35-year-old had only recently joined the squad as a replacement for Jack Edwards, who himself was sidelined with a foot issue. The franchise is yet to announce a replacement for Payne.
"David Payne has been ruled out of TATA IPL 2026 after sustaining an ankle injury. Wishing him a speedy recovery.” SRH said in a post on X.

Payne featured in just two matches this season. He returned figures of 2 for 35 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opener, showing some promise early on. However, he struggled to replicate that performance in his next outing against Kolkata Knight Riders, where he went wicketless while conceding 35 runs.
Injury concerns continue to pile up for Sunrisers Hyderabad
The 2016 champions are dealing with a growing list of injuries. England allrounder Brydon Carse was also ruled out after suffering a hand injury during a training session. He did not get a chance to feature in a match this season.
There is some positive news for the side as captain Pat Cummins has been cleared to rejoin the squad after undergoing scans on his back in Sydney. He is yet to play this season but is targeting a return against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on April 25. His comeback could provide stability to a bowling unit that has been stretched due to injuries.
Young pacers step up in crucial moment
Despite the setbacks, SRH have found bright spots in their recent outing against Rajasthan. Young pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain delivered an impressive spell that dismantled a strong batting lineup. Their performance has given the team a fresh boost and added depth to the pace attack.
With two wins in five matches, SRH are currently placed fourth on the points table. The return of Cummins and the emergence of young bowlers could help them stay competitive. However, managing injuries will remain key as the tournament progresses.
