Sami Zayn is still working as a strong mid card and he is doing an amazing job ever since he became a part of the Bloodline storyline back in 2022. He already won multiple mid card titles. At first, he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the 4th time at WrestleMania XL by defeating the undefeated streak of Gunther.
He did not get to test any title win after dropping the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Bron Breakker at SummerSlam 2024. Finally, he won the WWE United States Championship for the first time recently in an episode of SmackDown when he defeated Solo Sikoa. He brought back the famous US title Open challenge after winning the title that was introduced by John Cena.
Why Sami Zayn dropped the WWE United States Championship
He kept on conducting the US Title open challenge every week on SmackDown, and finally, he dropped the Championship to Ilja Dragunov, who answered the Open Challenge in a recent episode of SmackDown. Dragunov remained out of action for over a year, and he made a huge impact by beating Sami Zayn for the US Title.
Sami Zayn had been the US Champion for 49 days
But why did Sami Zayn lose the Championship only 49 days after winning it? He was doing an amazing job at the Champion, and the fans were pretty much satisfied with his title reign. Wrestling legend and former WCW World Heavyweight Champion Vince Russo recently explained the potential reason behind his title drop. He explained the following on his “BroDown” podcast,
Ilja Dragunov defeated him to take the title away from him
“They had to get the title off Sami because they are getting him ready for the big title. They do that every time bro, they do that every time. They had to get that title off him because he’s going to be competing for the World title next.”
“All he has to do is win the Rumble in Saudi. That’s all he’s gotta do. They don’t need a story, they don’t need nothing. That’s all he has to do.” said Vince Russo, regarding the defeat of Sami and the potential reason behind dropping the WWE United States Championship to Ilja Dragunov.
