Before working on his retirement match, John Cena will have another match this Saturday at Survivor Series, where he will defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time in his wrestling career. The previous champion Dominik Mysterio got the opportunity to challenge him for the title in a rematch.

The final opponent of John Cena has not been determined yet, as a 16 man tournament is presently going on to decide the final opponent. The quarter final of the tournament is on its way, with Gunther and Solo Sikoa advancing to the semi finals on RAW last Monday. The other two matches of the quarter finals will take place on SmackDown this Friday.

Scott D'Amore thinks John Cena should not drop the IC Championship before his retirement

But before the final match, Cena has to go through one final quest where he will have to defend his IC title. Dominik Mysterio has a big chance of beating Cena in this match and taking the title away; however, professional wrestling veteran Scott D'Amore thinks Cena should not drop the championship before his retirement. While writing on his weekly The D’Amore Drop column, he explained the following;

John Cena will defend the IC Championship against Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series

“I’ll add that I think he should retain the title in next week’s Survivor Series rematch vs. Dirty Dom in San Diego. He shouldn’t lose the title at all before he retires in three weeks. I don’t think retiring with the belt hurts the belt at all. In fact, I think it elevates it.

John Cena IC Champion

He will have his retirement match at Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13

"There is something powerful about Cena, one of the greatest WWE stars of all time, holding that championship on the way out. This should be a Sting-level sendoff, not a Goldberg-level sendoff. Cena has given WWE 20 years of his body, his time, his name, and his life. He has earned his hero’s farewell.” said D'Amore regarding the IC Championship defence of John Cena.

Gunther presently stands as the favourite to win the Last Time is Now tournament and to go on to challenge Cena at the upcoming Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13. Gunther advanced to the semi finals after defeating Carmelo Hayes on RAW last Monday, and he will meet Solo Sikoa in the semi finals. It is expected that Cena will pass the torch to Gunther in his final match.
