Vince Russo was one of the key figures behind the ultimate success of WWE during the mid and late 90s, as he was one of the key writers of the promotion. He was responsible for multiple successful angles in the promotion, including the idea of the rivalry between Vince McMahon and Stone Cold Steve Austin, among others.
But in 1999, he decided to leave WWE and joined WCW as a writer for the promotion. He had an excellent reputation for working in WWE, and WCW fans were highly obliged to get him. But surprisingly, he did A terrible job at WCW, and he is considered one of the major reasons behind the downfall of the promotion.

JBL makes a joke that Vince Russo was Vince McMahon's undercover agent
There has always been a conspiracy theory that Vince Russo was sent by Vince McMahon to WCW to destroy the promotion. WWE Hall of Famer JBL recently made a joke about the same and revealed that he also used to make such jokes back then. During his recent appearance on the “Something To Wrestle With” podcast, he said the following;
Vince Russo joined WCW as the head writer in 1999
“We used to always joke that Vince McMahon sent Vince Russo down there. We always thought he was still under contract to WWE. Vince McMahon even joked about that.” he continued, “Oh yeah. Yeah, we used to joke about that, that Vince Russo was so bad down there that Vince McMahon sent him. And Vince McMahon himself would make jokes about it, ‘Oh yeah, I sent him down there.’ You know, joking.”

WCW died in early 2001
“He tried to get me to stop talking with a Southern accent. He hated it. He said, ‘Anybody with a southern accent sounds stupid.’ And so he had some type of Southern bias. I thought Stone Cold did pretty well, and I thought JR did pretty well. But he had a southern bias, coming from the arrogance of coming from the North, I guess. And, you know, owning a video store, comic store, whatever the hell it was. But I don’t know. I don’t know what the whole issue was.”
WCW was destroyed in the early days of 2001, and after the death of this famous promotion, a new professional wrestling promotion was established under the name TNA Wrestling in 2002. Russo became the head writer of this new promotion and remained active in the promotion for over 12 years. Presently, he is not active in any wetly promotion, but he is treated as a pundit.
