The first match between John Cena and The Rock from WrestleMania 28 is often considered one of the best matches in WrestleMania history. WWE kept on promoting this match for one long year, and it was the first time in wrestling history that WWE took so much time to promote one single match.

The match was indeed a dream match, and WWE delivered everything in this match. The fans loved it, and they just could not get enough of it. But on the very next year, WWE decided to return with this match again as they organised John Cena vs The Rock at WrestleMania 29 again. This match could not be as good as its previous counterpart, and it was even one of the most criticized matches ever.

The Rock John Cena

The Rock explains why he ended his match against John Cena at WrestleMania 29

During the match, Rock suffered a massive injury as he tore his abdomen, adductor, and quad tendons. But despite the injuries, he decided to continue the match and went on for another 20 minutes. Recently, the Hollywood Megastar spoke with NPR's Fresh Air, where he explained why he decided to end the match despite injuries. Here is what he has to say;

It was their second ever encounter

“In this WrestleMania match, if [Cena] would have asked me, ‘Hey, are you okay?’ And I say, ‘No, there is something wrong,’ and he says, ‘Okay, let’s go home,’ we would know where to pick up. It’s almost like you go right to the third act of the script, and we would go home. That would be the end of the match.

"I didn’t want to tell John that because I knew the match would end, and I didn’t want the match to end in that way. Not only was it important to me to go out on my shield, I knew this was my very last match of my entire career. My career was going to end on this night. No one knew, but I knew.”

The Rock John Cena

The Rock defended the WWE Championship against John Cena in this match

“The other reason, and maybe more important than my career ending, I was doing the honors. That means you’re passing the torch to someone who is going to carry it from here on out. That was to John, and that was the finish to our match; me doing the honors for him and him beating me in the middle of the ring to become champion. That’s why I didn’t want the match to end right away. I wanted him to have his moment. That’s important.”

The Rock vs John Cena from WrestleMania 29 was not favoured by the majority of the fans because WWE made it extremely predictable by adding the WWE Championship in this match. Everybody knew Dwayne would not return for a long time after this match, so he would definitely lose. And that is exactly what happened.
