Cody Rhodes made a sensational return to WWE at WrestleMania 38 as the surprise opponent of Seth Rollins. He was out of the promotion for 6 long years, and he is even considered one of the founding members of AEW. WWE never treated him anything more than a mid card during his first run in the promotion.
But after he returned to the promotion, WWE not only treated him as a main eventer, but as the face of the promotion. He started things off with an amazing rivalry with Seth Rollins with three back to back victories over the former world champion. The last match of the food to place inside the Hell in a Cell at the Hell in a Cell event of 2022.

But unfortunately, Cody Rhodes suffered a massive torn pectoral injury just before Hell in a Cell, and it kept him out of action for 9 long months. Still, he competed with this injury and delivered the match of the year. Seth Rollins recently remembered this injury and discussed how WWE did not have enough options following this injury. Speaking on the “Games With Names” podcast, he explained the following;

“In my head, I was hoping to get it back story-wise. I don’t know what the planned outcome of the match was before he hurt his pec. We hadn’t gotten that far. Usually, I just wait until the day of to understand what that’s going to be, and we take it from there.

"When he hurt his pec, at least to me, it felt obvious that he should win that match. That’s the best story. Even though he was going to be gone for nine months. ‘Do we give Seth the win because Cody is going to be gone?’ That’s oftentimes how it works. It just made sense from the story perspective, and I was a heel; it wasn’t going to hurt me to lose at that point.”
Cody Rhodes returned to WWE directly at Royal Rumble 2023 as a participant in the men's Royal Rumble match, and he went on to win the Rumble match. He challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Championship in a failed attempt. He won the men's Royal Rumble match of 2024 agai,n and this time he did not make any mistake of beating Roman Reigns at WrestleMania XL to take the Undisputed WWE Championship away from him.
