Previously, professional wrestling used to be so much fun, and the biggest reason behind it was no dominance of social media. Back then, things were simple; we believed everything that was shown to us by the professional wrestling promotions, like The Undertaker and Kane were real life brothers as told by WWE, the on screen affairs, and many other things.
But nowadays, things have completely changed because of social media, and wrestling promotions also have to take a realistic approach. The fans can hear from their favourite wrestlers anytime through social media and also remain in touch with them. That is why it is a big responsibility for every wrestler to use social media carefully.

Rob Van Dam explained why wrestlers should use social media with special responsibility
Professional wrestling legend and WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam also explained the same thing when he said that it is a big responsibility when you are a professional wrestler, and you should always be careful when you are using social media. Rob Van Dam talked about it on his “1 Of A Kind” podcast, where he explained the following;
Rob Van Dam is a former WWE World Champion
“When you’re a wrestler, you are a public figure. And your very value depends on your public image and how your public image is perceived by the people. That’s why like, a big company like WWE wants to control all of its assets in the talent department as much as possible. Especially when they’re young and stupid and don’t know, you know what’s going too far, and what they shouldn’t shouldn’t be saying online. And so, that’s always an issue.” said Rob Van Dam.
“Something like that — you know, you go posting some hateful s*it, it could definitely affect their plans for what they’re doing with you. Building you up as this big meat and potatoes, all-American babyface.

Rob Van Dam was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021
“Then at the same time after work, you’re getting all your own heat, all your own hate by putting stupid, judgmental stuff that is really inconsistent with the character they’re building for you — and even with people even liking you. So 100%, that affects the value of your value at your job, and how well you can do your job. Totally different than like, a factory job.”
Unpredictability is also a huge thing that has been killed by social media. Most of the big plans that were supposed to be surprises get leaked on social media. But still, the wrestling promotions try their best to keep their secrets intact. For example, they did not let anyone know John Cena's heel turn, which had been one of the most shocking moments of this year. It is really difficult to manage everything properly in the age of social media.
