The World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 41 faced a lot of criticism, and a large number of they believe that this match should never be on the card. Jey Uso could not handle the pressure of the main event at a stage like WrestleMania, and ultimately turned out to be one of the worst matches of the event.

At the WWE Unreal series on Netflix, it had been revealed that the original plans for WrestleMania 41 were quite different from what we watched. Especially the world heavyweight title picture, which is supposed to be a fatal 4 way match. WWE legend Paul Heyman recently spoke on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” where he revealed regarding the World Heavyweight Championship match;

WrestleMania 41 Gunther Jey Uso

Paul Heyman reveals the original plans for WrestleMania 41

“The original idea for this year’s ‘Mania was Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins, Gunther vs. CM Punk. I think Cody and Cena was always the path. We also discussed, at some point, do we do Cody vs. Roman III? Do they main event a third WrestleMania in a row? That would’ve been interesting, too. I mean, we explored all options.”

The World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 41 was supposed to be a fatal 4 way

“The dynamic between Roman and Punk was so fascinating to watch,” Heyman stated. “We said, ‘Ooh. Is it Roman vs. Punk? Is it Seth vs. Gunther? … And then, at some point, we realized it’s so much more intriguing as a Triple Threat, and Jey Uso’s riding a wave of momentum.”

WrestleMania 41 Seth Rollins

Michael Hayes pitched the idea to put Jey Uso in the World Heavyweight Championship match

So it is pretty much clear that Jey Uso was never supposed to be a part of the World Heavyweight Championship picture, nor a Royal Rumble candidate. As we have seen in WWE Unreal, it was Michael Hayes who proposed the name of Jey Uso to win the men's Royal Rumble match this year, and ultimately, it was accepted. Otherwise, the original candidates were John Cena or CM Punk.

So the triple threat match on the main event of Night 1 was supposed to be for the World Heavyweight Championship match, including Gunther, and it was supposed to be a fatal 4 way match, which could have definitely been pinned better than what we witnessed at the event. So changes in professional wrestling are not always for the good.
