Just before the beginning of his rivalry with Randy Orton, he had a really gruesome feud with Cody Rhodes over the Undisputed WWE Championship. He could not win the title despite having a really brutal rivalry with multiple matches.

It has ended the careers of the biggest names in the wrestling world, like Stone Cold Steve Austin's career was shortened because of a neck injury. Edge, Daniel Bryan, and Paige all had to announce their retirement because of neck injuries, but thankfully, they could all come back.
Fightful Select recently reported that Kevin Owens needs a spinal fusion procedure for recovery, which has not been scheduled yet. Whenever the surgery is performed, he will need a year after that to return to the ring. So it is pretty much confirmed that he will not be able to be a part of WrestleMania 42. The good news is, there is a big possibility that he would be able to return to action.
