John Cena is often considered one of the most beloved baby faces in the history of professional wrestling history and he worked as a hero for over 2 decades in WWE. He had been the face of WWE for a long time, and he is the only face in WWE history, apart from Hulk Hogan, who never worked as a heel in the promotion while being the face of it.
John Cena had his first heel run back in 2003, and he had been a tremendous heel despite it being his early days in the promotion. He started watching as a babyface from Survivor Series 2003, and since then, he has never turned heel for the next 21 years. In 2005, he won his first WWE World Championship, and it was also the beginning of his run as the face of the promotion.

It had been a consistent demand from the fans that they wanted to see John Cena as a heel after he established himself as the biggest name in WWE. But it had been pretty much clear that Vince McMahon did not want to turn him heel at any cost. The fans had to face disappointment after disappointment as Cena was closing in on his retirement and the dream of seeing evil Cena never achieved.

But the dream finally came true after John Cena started his retirement tour earlier this year. He shocked the entire world by turning heel after winning the men's Elimination Chamber match at the Elimination Chamber event. He remained a villain until August, and he did everything he could as a villain.

Despite turning heel, the majority of the fans were not happy with his heel run as they believed it could have been much better. But professional wrestling legend Vince Russo recently defended Cena for his heel run, as he said that Cena did everything to make things as exciting as he could. Speaking on his “Writing with Russo” podcast, he said the following;
“No doubt he went out there and did the best he could do. I mean, we were saying that every week. As bad as I thought it was, I was just saying, my God, the only one that could make any sense out of this is Cena. Nobody could do this. We were saying it while he was doing it.” stated the former writer of WWE and WCW.
