King of the Ring is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of professional wrestling, and it has been in existence since the mid 80s. Over the years, it has produced many future top stars like “The Hitman” Bret Hart and ‘The Rated R Superstar’ Edge. It has always been known as one of the most prolific competitions to promote the next big star.
After the King of the Ring 2002 event, Vince McMahon stopped presenting King of the Ring regularly, and he also stopped the PPV forever. However, he organized the tournament sometimes, but not on a regular basis. Old school fans always complained about destroying the prestigious tournament, and they always demanded it to be brought back.

The present WWE Chief Content Officer, Triple H, has brought back the famous last year on a permanent basis, and it looks like it will take place each and every year. He even named a PLE by the names King and Queen of the Ring following the prestigious event. This year, however, he did not organize the event, but booked the finals in the Night of Champions PLE.

But the question arises, what is the present purpose of King of the Ring? Originally, it was booked to promote the next big star, and the winners of these tournaments went on to become the biggest stars of wrestling, like Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin.

But under Triple H’s reign, the tournament is serving a completely different purpose, and you can see King of the Ring or Queen of the Ring is not booked to promote the next big stars, but it is being won by the stars who are already top stars. This year, the final of the men’s tournament was between Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton, both of whom are established.

So what is the point of organizing this tournament on a regular basis? It looks like King of the Ring is now getting a Royal Rumble treatment, as Royal Rumble is used to determine the World title challenger at WrestleMania, King of the Ring winners challenge for the World title at Summerslam, and that looks to be the sole purpose of this historic tournament.
