Gunther created history in 2025 after he retired as one of the biggest names in the world of professional wrestling in the same year, Goldberg and John Cena. Cena went through a retirement tour throughout 2025, and he had his final match at the Saturday Night's Main Event. WWE organized a 16 men tournament to determine his final opponent.

Gunther won the tournament and faced John Cena in his retirement match at the mentioned event. Not only did he defeat John Cena in this match, but made him submit for the first time in 21 long years. The fans were extremely frustrated with this decision, and they started showing immense hatred towards the Ring General.

Kevin Nash criticizes WWE for Gunther's booking following SNME

It is quite clear WWE wanted to cope with this hatred as they had him rub his victory over John Cena following the event. He kept on bragging about it on the episodes of RAW. But WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash is not happy with the way WWE has used him following SNME. Speaking on his “Kliq This” podcast, he explained the following;

Gunther defeated John Cena in his farewell match on December 13

“I was really disappointed with his entrance and his performance on Monday’s show… We talked about [the Saturday Night’s Main Event finish] before the show, and we all knew that the only finish that was a possible finish was for Cena to tap. Because if Cena wins, how do you open Monday’s show?

He made John Cena tap out for the first time in 21 years

“What’s the first segment on Monday Raw, if Cena wins? Do we run his 20-minute package that we saw on Saturday, and we add the last three minutes to his win on that Saturday. And then we just put that in a bow, and then we just start from ** scratch, start pushing the ** car up the hill. Or do we come in with momentum?”

The present scenario for the Ring General is not very clear, but there are a number of big rumours about his future. Presently, some of the big rumours are suggesting that WWE is planning a huge Gunther vs Brock Lesnar match at WrestleMania 42, and he may even go on to retire him at some point.
