Gunther has been receiving a lot of hatred from the fans ever since he made John Cena submit in his retirement match at the Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13. It was the first time that Cena tapped out in 21 long years. The fans did not expect Cena to be defeated in this manner in his farewell match, and the hatred has shifted to the Ring General who was responsible for his defeat.

WWE organised a 16 man tournament to determine the final opponent of John Cena. Gunther won this tournament and earned the opportunity to challenge Cena in his farewell match at the Saturday Night's Main Event on December 13. Much like the rest of his retirement tour, Cena had been quite impressive in his final match, too.

But ultimately, he had to answer to the Sleeper Hold locked in by the Ring General. The fans were in utter shock after Cena tapped out, which was quite clear from their facial expressions. They started showing hatred towards Gunther, but the former two times WWE World Heavyweight Champion expressed his feelings that eventually these fans would turn into his fans. Speaking on TMZ’s “Inside the Ring” podcast, he said;

Gunther is a former two times WWE World Heavyweight Champion

“I guess yeah, for him personally, I mean it’s a it’s a just objectively it was like a picture perfect ending for a career. I mean, the guy was on top for how long did he do it? Like 25 years or something. And yeah, now he called it quits. He had his own decision more or less to be, ‘Okay, that’s my [farewell] tour,’ and he’s retiring now, yeah, a made man. Set up for life.

He made John Cena tap out in his final match

"I think that’s the ideal outcome you would wish for every wrestler when they end their career. So I don’t know what everybody’s crying about, actually, to be honest, because I don’t know it’s the ultimate achievable outcome, I think. So people need to learn to live with that a little bit. I don’t think it was a sad occasion. Life goes on.”

Gunther appeared on the very next episode of RAW to cultivate the heat even more, and it is pretty much clear that WWE wants to put him over as the biggest heel of the promotion. Ever since joining WWE, he has done a tremendous job, and he has not disappointed while retiring John Cena either. He is also rumoured to face Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42 as well.
