Gunther created history by ending the careers of two of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling, Goldberg and John Cena on the same year. Both of the events were Saturday Night's Main Event, as in July, he faced WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in his retirement match on the main event of the show.

Goldberg challenged The Ring General for the World Heavyweight Championship in his retirement match, but ultimately, he failed to win the Championship in his retirement match as he was beaten. John Cena, on the other hand, had a retirement tour throughout 2025, and to determine his last ever opponent, WWE organised a 16 man tournament.

Gunther compared ending the careers of Goldberg and John Cena

Gunther won the tournament and challenged Cena in his last-ever professional wrestling match at the Saturday Night's Main Event show on December 13. Much like Goldberg, The Ring General defeated Cena, too, in his retirement match. He recently spoke with TMZ’s “Inside the Ring” podcast, where he compared these two matches;

Gunther ended the career of Goldberg in July

“Well, very different situation, I think, because, yeah, Goldberg was also limited, way more limited than John was, and John was, yeah, was just a better wrestler overall his whole career. It’s not like a dig to Goldberg. He didn’t get famous by putting on in-ring master classes. That was never his thing, so it was a very different situation, but also the magnitude of it.

He also defeated John Cena in his retirement match on December 13

"Obviously, Goldberg is a big name, but it’s not comparable to what John Cena represents or what he — yeah, the following he has and what he carries with him and what the connection that people have to him. It was hard to compare.” said the former two times WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

After ending the career of John Cena by making him submit to the Sleeper Hold, Gunther received immense hatred from the fans, and WWE officials are taking the full advantage of the situation by establishing him as the biggest heel of the promotion right now. The Ring General is also rumoured to end the career of Brock Lesnar in the near future.
