Gunther wrestling career
Gunther joined the world of professional wrestling back in 2005, and he started working under the ring name Big Van Walter. During his early days, he worked in multiple independent circuit wrestling promotions, including Westside Xtreme Wrestling, where he remained active for a long time.
Westside Xtreme Wrestling played a major role in building him as a top professional wrestler. He was a huge star of this German professional wrestling promotion. He also worked in multiple British and Irish independent circuit wrestling promotions and earned success from all over the European Indies. He defeated Ricochet in an episode of SmackDown to win the Championship. Nobody knew back then that it was going to be the most iconic reign of the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
He became the longest reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion in history by breaking the record previously set by The Honky Tonk Man in the 80s. He dropped the Championship to Gunther at WrestleMania XL. This was also the beginning of his main event run, which started instantly after he dropped the Intercontinental Championship.
He went on to win the King of the Ring tournament of 2024 and earned the right to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. He defeated Damian Priest at the mentioned event to become the World Heavyweight Champion for the first time. By that time, his faction, Imperium, was dissolved.
He dropped the championship at WrestleMania 41 to Jey Uso, but regained the Championship from him in around three months' time.
