Adam Copeland Edge's final run in WWE is still considered one of the most incomplete runs by any major wrestler in the promotion. He was forced to retire from in ring action back in 2011 because of a neck injury he suffered in the same year, and ultimately, it ended his wrestling career. It was a huge loss for the wrestling world, as he was still quite young and also had a lot of things in him.

But he was finally able to make a sensational return in 2020 during the men's Royal Rumble match as a surprise entrant. He started working in WWE regularly, and he had multiple rivalries with some of the top stars like Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and even Finn Balor. The first rivalry he had upon his return was against his former Tag Team partner, Randy Orton.

Edge Vs Randy Orton 1

Edge remembered his match with Randy Orton from Backlash 2020

Edge vs. Randy Orton from the Backlash event of 2020 was promoted as the Greatest Match Ever. It was a great match, and it went on for 45 long minutes. But ultimately, the match turned out to be a forgettable engagement. The Rated R Superstar recently remembered this match and explained why it was a failure. Speaking on the “Inside The Ropes” podcast,

“The worldwide pandemic is much more important than Randy and I seeing our story through properly. But that being said, I feel like it really hurt the momentum of our story for sure, because man, when we were doing it in front of audiences, that crowd was white hot for it.”

“And then you go to just who knows when we get back, and there’s hundreds of thousands of people that… like it’s just such an odd time. And then to do a WrestleMania Performance Center, no people, and just it’s just two dudes, you just hear the meat smacking, you know, and it’s just like, oh God, is this even worth it? You know?”

“And it was, don’t get me wrong, because we supplied entertainment for people during a really weird time. But, you know, I really wish we could have had that Mania match in front of a crowd so they could get with the stand, the 10 counts. And I definitely wish that Backlash match could have been in front of more than just, you know, 20 students at the PC for sure, because I’m still really proud of that match and the circumstances that Randy and I were put in to try and pull something off there.”

Edge Randy Orton

Edge is presently active in AEW

“Pretty ridiculous, you know? You call me and tell me, OK, we’re going to build the greatest wrestling match ever, only there’s no audience. Well, hey, what does that even mean? There’s no such thing as the greatest anything unless you’re in an actual athletic contest. Like, we know who the best hockey team is — they win the Stanley Cup. There’s no such thing as the greatest wrestling match because it’s different for everybody.”

The pandemic era is widely considered the worst time period in the history of professional wrestling. Whatever the promotion did, things from that remained incomplete without the live crowd, so as the Edge vs. Randy Orton rivalry. This time period also made us understand why the live crowd is the most important thing in any sports entertainment of them all. We seriously hope such a time never returns.
