The conflict between Cody Rhodes and The Rock before WrestleMania XL was very much visible, and things became quite complicated between the two at that time. Rhodes was really close to finishing his story after he won the Royal Rumble match for the second time and challenged Roman Reigns for the title at WrestleMania XL.

But The Rock had the idea to hijack his main event spot, and he wanted to challenge Roman Reigns for the title on the main event of WrestleMania XL. It was even announced on live television, and Roman Reigns and The Rock stood face to face, making things clear that these two are going to headline WrestleMania.

But the fans did not like the idea at all, and they started protesting against this idea on social media and on the weekly shows like SmackDown and RAW, too. Ultimately, WWE had to give up on the idea of Roman Reigns vs The Rock, and they awarded the main event to Cody Rhodes, something that the fans wanted to see. Rhodes recently had an interview with Today, where he claimed that this incident started a real life conflict between him and The Rock. He said;

The Rock almost hijacked the main event of WrestleMania XL

“We heard the fans, we made the call, and I feel everyone’s on the same page now, at least in terms of, we’ve got a beautiful two nights of WrestleMania. The suspension of disbelief in what we do, sometimes it’s hard to tell, but I can tell you from standing in the ring with The Rock when he’s talking, he means what he says.”

“There’s a part of him that I think feels spurned that the fans chose me in the setting over him. I think fans haven’t seen that. And from an outside-the-game perspective, that’s good for the show, and something new, something fresh.”

The fans stood beside Cody Rhodes, and he finally got his WrestleMania main event

“And I think with what we’ve seen on TV being a little, it’s far more personal in real life and on the screen than anything else that’s happening currently in wrestling. And so when you have those situations, you might as well get in the ring.”

Roman Reigns vs. The Rock might have been a dream match, but the majority of the fans wanted to see Cody Rhodes finish his story at WrestleMania since the storyline had been going on for more than a year, and the fans did not want The Rock to destroy his moment. Ultimately, Reigns vs. The Rock never took place, and it looks like it will never take place ever in the future.
