Bret Hart has always been accused of refusing to lose to many wrestlers during his career. This allegation was there even before the infamous Montreal Screwjob incident, where he refused to lose to Shawn Michaels at the Survivor Series event of 1997, and it ended up being a terrible mess as Vince McMahon had to call for the bell.

But Hart always claimed that he never denied losing to anyone except for Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997. Recently, he remembered his match with Triple H that was scheduled for Germany and explained why he refused to lose this match. Speaking with Walandi Tsanti on his YouTube channel recently, Bret Hart explained the following;

Why Bret Hart refused to lose to Triple H

“I wrestled him a couple of times. He was always trying to beat me. We did Monday Night RAW in Germany, and he was part of the booking now. He was in the booking committee with Vince and Jerry Brisco and all these guys. I get to Germany, which is one of my biggest markets ever. There was never a star in Germany like I was.”

“I get in the dressing room and Triple H is beating me; 1, 2, 3, in the middle of the ring. They kind of cornered me in the dressing room. Triple H is staring at me. [Brisco speaking], ‘This is what you’re doing. Triple H is gonna go over.’ I listened to them and I was like, ‘I want to talk to Vince. I’m not doing anything until I talk to Vince.’

Bret Hart and Triple H had multiple matches during the 90s

"I never refused to lose to anybody, except for Shawn at Survivor Series. They put me in a room with Vince and I said, ‘Why would you beat me in Germany? It’s a country where I’m super over. Why would you beat me with a guy who is not over? Why would you beat me in the middle of the ring, and I’m wrestling Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 a week from now? You’re going to beat me on Raw, pin me in the middle of the ring, and then you want me to wrestle Austin and do what?’

“Vince looked like somebody hit him with a sledgehammer. He goes, ‘You’re right. We have to change it.’ He realized they can’t beat me before I wrestled Steve. You could see Triple H turn white. He didn’t get to beat me. He had already mapped it out in his head that he was going to pin me and destroy me in Germany because he had the clout, which tells you what kind of piece of shit he was. I foiled him, temporarily. He was out to get me.”

Bret Hart also refused to lose to Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997

We have seen it multiple times that Vince McMahon always made the fan favorites lose to foreign arenas, even the hometown stars used to lose during his reign. It was more like he loved upsetting the fans. But it was also a great statement set for the winner of such matches.

Bret Hart has always been really critical of Triple H. He even criticized him for having more ratings in a WWE video game. Much like Goldberg, Triple H also gets criticized by Bret all the time. But we have never seen the Cerebral Assassin saying anything against the WWE Hall of Famer. In fact, he has always been respectful towards the wrestling legend.
