The Montreal Screwjob incident from Survivor Series 1997 is still remembered as one of the most infamous incidents in the history of professional wrestling. The incident got Bret Hart out of WWE, and Vince McMahon got embarrassed publicly. It could have been the ultimate downfall of WWE, but surprisingly, it became a huge boost for the promotion.
Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels had a one on one match in the main event of Survivor Series 1997, where the original plan was to have Shawn Michaels victorious. But Bret Hart refused to put over Michaels in this match, and ultimately, McMahon had to call for the bell when Hart was locked in a Sharpshooter, despite Hart never tapping.

Bret Hart remembers the Montreal Screwjob and criticized Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels
Hart was so angry after this incident that he spat on the face of Vince McMahon in front of the live crowd, and he made it clear that he would be going to WCW, the promotion that was the biggest competition of WWE back then. That is exactly what he did; he joined WCW, where he was treated as a main eventer. He won multiple titles, including the WCW World Heavyweight Championship two times.
But things did not go very well for him in WCW, as a botched superkick from Goldberg killed his career forever. He often regrets his decision to leave WWE to join WCW. Recently, he was seen discussing the Montreal Screwjob, where he criticised both Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels. Speaking on the “Johnny I Pro Show” recently, he said the following;
The Montreal Screwjob involved Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Vince McMahon
“I remember in the dressing room when Vince told everybody that Shawn was going to forfeit the belt because he had — what was his knee or something? I can’t remember what, I think it was his knee. And then Shawn, I remember Shawn was crying in the ring, and the tears were in his eyes and all that.
"And I just remember Vince — I was watching on the monitor in the back area with Vince. Me and Undertaker looked at each other and he rolled his eyes, that this whole thing was a bunch of bulls**t and that there was nothing wrong with Shawn.”
“Especially when you saw Shawn. Shawn, if you remember, he went to the corner and did a standing backflip after he forfeited the belt because of his knee injury. And I’m watching this and he does a standing backflip somersault off the top and lands right in the middle of the ring. And I’m going, ‘You can’t do that with a bad knee.’ Like what? ‘This is all bulls*. I remember Undertaker looked at me, and he pulled his eyelid down like this.”

“And the thing is that Shawn came back, and I remember Vince crying. Like when Shawn was in the ring talking about he lost some part of himself, or he was going to go find his smile. I remember Vince had the tear rolled down his cheek. And I remember watching it and going, ‘I think there’s more going on here between these two guys.’ Honestly.
“And I’m not trying to be — I’m just being honest and blunt. But I don’t know. I suspected and now I really have serious — I think that Shawn and Vince were sleeping with each other.” said the WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart, remembering the infamous Montreal Screwjob incident and criticising Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels again regarding their past issues.
