The Miami Open will gets underway soon and the 2026 edition of one of tennis's most celebrated events is already missing a significant number of its biggest names.

Twenty players have withdrawn from the combined ATP and WTA draws on the eve of the tournament, leaving organisers scrambling for replacements and fans adjusting their expectations of what the draw is going to look like over the coming fortnight.

The Sunshine Double, Indian Wells followed by Miami Open is meant to be the highlight of the hard court calendar, but the withdrawal list this year has taken some of the shine off the buildup.

Miami Open 2026: Emma Raducanu among thirteen to withdraw from a depleted women's draw

Thirteen players have pulled out of the Miami Open and the names on that list represent a meaningful chunk of the seedings. Emma Raducanu, the world number 23, withdrew after the draw was made citing illness, a blow that also carries ranking consequences given the points she will now fail to defend.

Emma Navarro at 27, and Maya Joint at 31, are also absent, as are Marketa Vondrousova, Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Pliskova, three decorated Czech players who ruled themselves out before the draw was made.

Lois Boisson, Sonay Kartal, Veronika Kudermetova, Daria Kasatkina and Oleksandra Oliynykova complete a withdrawal list that has required thirteen replacements to be called up, with lucky losers, Yulia Putintseva, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Alycia Parks and Anastasia Potapova among those stepping in.

Aryna Sabalenka, the reigning champion who claimed her maiden Miami title last year, remains in the draw and will start as the heavy favourite in a field that has been significantly thinned out above her.

Miami Open 2026: Djokovic the headline name on the men's side

Seven players have withdrawn from the ATP event, and the biggest name among them is Novak Djokovic.

The world number three and six-time Miami Open champion was forced out on Sunday with a shoulder injury, ending his participation in a tournament where he was runner-up just twelve months ago.

Holger Rune and Tallon Griekspoor, who would both have been seeded, had already ruled themselves out before the draw was made having also missed Indian Wells. Juan Manuel Cerundolo is the only man to withdraw after the draw, taking his place in the field before being replaced by a lucky loser.

Jacob Fearnley steps in for Djokovic, with James Duckworth, Alexander Shevchenko and Miomir Kecmanovic among the other replacements called up across the seven spots. Jakub Mensik, last year's men's champion, remains in the draw alongside the sport's current frontrunners.

Miami Open 2026: What the tournament still has going for it

The withdrawals are significant but they have not stripped Miami of its appeal entirely. Jannik Sinner arrives on the back of winning Indian Wells, lifting the trophy in a final that did not feature Carlos Alcaraz, the top-ranked Spaniard fell to Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals in what was his first defeat of 2026.

Alcaraz is chasing his first Miami title since 2022, Sinner has appeared in three Miami finals and is hunting his second triumph at the venue, and Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz all represent genuine threats in a draw that has opened up considerably without Djokovic.

The women's event gets underway today with the men following on Wednesday, and despite everything the withdrawal list has taken away, there is still plenty left to play for at the Hard Rock Stadium.
