Iran and the USA are facing a historic standoff, not just in the political field but also on the football field. The FIFA World Cup 2026, arguably the biggest sporting event on the planet, is about to begin in less than three months, but Iran's participation is not clear.

The Iranian football team has already qualified for the World Cup and is in Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. However, the main reason behind raising questions about their participation is the venue. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the USA, with whom Iran is in an active state of direct military conflict.

On 28 February 2026, US-Israeli air strikes led to the demise of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Despite the growing tension between the two nations, the FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, confirmed that USA President Donald Trump assured him about Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup.

However, two days after his initial assurances, Trump issued a subtle warning towards Iran's football team.

Donald Trump on Truth Social platform said: “The Iran National Football Team is welcome to the World Cup, but I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety”.

Iran’s national team took no time in their response, saying, “The World Cup is a historic and international event and its governing body is FIFA, not any individual country. Iran’s national team, with strength and a series of decisive victories achieved by the brave sons of Iran, was among the first teams to qualify for this major tournament.

“Certainly no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup; the only country that can be excluded is one that merely carries the title of ‘host’ yet lacks the ability to provide security for the teams participating in this global event.”

The world is shaken to its core as both nations are in an active military conflict. Besides that, there is no sign of either nation backing down against the other. The main question for all football fans around the world is, “Would Iran be replaced in the 2026 World Cup?”

Who can potentially replace Iran in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

At this point, two teams most likely to replace Iran are Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. Iraq is currently the favourite after being the highest-ranked Asian team yet to qualify for the World Cup. They also won the AFC regional playoffs. The UAE was defeated by Iraq in the AFC playoff and is next in line as the most worthy replacement.

FIFA is the final decision maker on which teams will qualifyandr how many teams will play in the tournament. Under FIFA regulation 6.7, they could directly replace Iran from Group G and slot in Iraq. This would also allow the UAE to take Iraq’s place and fight for a chance in the upcoming qualifying rounds.

Iran has qualified for back-to-back World Cups. Despite going out in the group stages last year, Team Melli is still a strong sidethath could put up a strong fight against any footballing nation. With less than 90 days left for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the decision will surely be made sooner rather than later.
