The match-up between Manchester City and Real Madrid has become a mainstay in the UEFA Champions League. In the last five years, two heavyweights have played each other five times in UCL knockouts, with the Spanish giants having eliminated the English side four times.

In the 2025-26 UCL season, Los Blancos defeated the Citizens 5-1 over two legs in the Round of 16. Real Madrid have won the Champions League 15 times and most recently were crowned the champions of Europe in 2024, whereas Manchester City’s sole title win was back in 2023.

In the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid defeated the Citizens 3-0. Club captain Federico Valverde scored a first-half hat-trick to seal the victory. In the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, Madrid beat City 2-1. Vinicius Junior scored twice, while Erling Haaland scored for the home side.

Besides that, in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva was shown a straight red card in the 20th minute for a goal-line handball. Moreover, Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois denied Man City star Phil Foden from point-blank range in the 75th minute.

This ends Pep Guardiola’s men’s journey in the Champions League this season. The Citizens will now look to salvage their season by pushing for the Premier League trophy. On the other hand, Real Madrid will try to win their 16th UCL title and also challenge Barcelona in La Liga.
