Indian cricket has been blessed with a rich culture of batting talent for years. When a generation gets on the verge of their retirement, a crop of youngsters who are possibly more talented just keep waiting to take over. The story has repeated itself again and the next gen of Indian cricket has somewhat seen a smooth transition, especially in Test cricket.

Shubman Gill rewrites record books with 10th Test century

Virat Kohli, Cheteswar Pujara, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane, all the stalwarts of Indian cricket who helped India win several matches in the past decade, fell off in the past few years. It led to the announcement of retirement for three of them. Transition in cricket is never easy, and it's the hardest in Test cricket. The most evident result was India's loss against New Zealand at home. It was clear that things needed to change. To add to their misery, they further suffered a loss in BGT against Australia.

Yashasvi Jaiswal crosses 150: All facts and figures about this feat

As the performances of greats were poor, the time had arrived for a change. There is never a dearth of talent in Indian cricket. The team management relied on two of their most promising talents, to take over the mantle. Expectations were high, and the prodigies delivered. While Yashasvi Jaiswal showed terrific composure in the BGT and emerged as arguably the best batter of the series. Against a fearsome bowling lineup of Australia, he showed that he has everything in his arsenal to become a Test match great. Touring Australia is never easy, and doing it for the first time is one hell of a challenge. He took up the challenge, scored 391 runs with a century and ended the tour with a very healthy average of 43.44.

Shubhman Gill on the other hand had an average tour, where he just couldn't convert his starts into big scores. There were many question marks over his place in the squad. Amidst all the noise, he was appointed as the captain which raised many eyebrows. What happened next was a stuff of dreams. On his first assignment, he had a tough task of playing the English team, that too in their home soil. Gill shut out all the critics, scoring a staggering 754 runs, breaking many records. Along the way the most important thing achieved by him was justifying his appointment as the Captain of the Indian team.

Jaiswal too continued his form in England and scored more than 400 runs in the tour. Both the youngsters carried on with their test form against a relatively easier West Indian team and have scored a hundred each till now. When both these batters were making a mark at junior level, they did stand separately. The hunger and the passion to make it to the bigger stage was already evident.

The qualities to bounce back against odds, to perform when written off, to constantly evolve their game according to the situation and condition, to quickly adjust as per the demands of the game which is ever so evolving, where the template changes drastically. Jaiswal and Gill both have shown the promise to perform in all the formats and change their approach accordingly. Gill is already the number one ranked batter in the ODIs, Jaiswal on the other hand has shown his explosiveness in whatever limited opportunities he has gotten in T20 internationals.

The time seems to be right to blood both the batters into the Indian setup in all formats. As both of them are entering their prime years, they will continue to win matches for India, in the years to come. If anything, the Indian team will be benefited by the brilliance, and that will serve as a treat to all the good wishers of Indian Cricket.
