NEW DELHI: In a huge relief, India’s middle order batter Tilak Varma is set to reach the BCCI Centre of Excellence on Tuesday. The left-hander suffered an abdominal issue during the Vijay Hazare Trophy and later underwent surgery in Rajkot, which ruled him out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand starting from Wednesday.

Tilak Varma on the road to recovery

According to timesofindia.com, Tilak is expected to slowly increase his workload over the next few days before returning to full match fitness.

"If everything goes well, he will be fit before the fourth T201 on January 28 in Visakhapatnam. He has resumed physical training and, in a day or two, will start batting and other skill-based activities," the source stated.

Journey so far and what lies ahead

Tilak last featured for India during the South Africa T20I series. He then went on to lead Hyderabad in two matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which also included a brilliant century while playing for his state side. Later, Tilak Varma started feeling pain around his abdominal area and scans soon confirmed an injury that needed surgical attention.

The young left-hander has already featured in 40 T20I matches for India and has scored 1,182 runs with an impressive strike rate of around 144.

One of his most memorable knocks came against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final, where he almost single-handedly took the game away after the rest of the batting line-up failed to fire.
