English all-rounder James Coles made the headlines on Thursday, March 12, as he became the most expensive signing in the first-ever The Hundred in 2026 auction.
The 21-year-old cricketer from Sussex was signed by London Spirit for a massive £390,000 (approximately INR 4.1 crore), a figure that took the cricket world by surprise.
The landmark auction marked a major shift for the England and Wales Cricket Board’s 100-ball competition, which had previously relied on draft systems to distribute players among franchises.
With franchises now given the chance to bid openly, several international stars were expected to dominate the headlines. Instead, it was a young domestic talent who walked away as the biggest winner.
