Ahead of India’s T20I series opener against South Africa, skipper Suryakumar Yadav welcomed the return of Hardik Pandya, highlighting how the all-rounder’s experience provides crucial balance to the squad as they prepare for next year’s T20 World Cup. Pandya, who has played 120 T20Is for India, returns after recovering from a quadriceps injury sustained during the Asia Cup in September. He has already shown encouraging form representing Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was among the first to join India’s practice session at the Barabati Stadium on Sunday.
Vice-captain Shubman Gill also rejoins the squad, having recovered from a neck injury sustained during the Test series against South Africa at Eden Gardens.
“Both of them look healthy and fit,” said Suryakumar in Monday’s pre-match press conference. “Hardik brings options with the new ball and his experience in big ICC and ACC events is invaluable. His presence gives balance to the side.”
Gill will open the batting alongside in-form Abhishek Sharma, strengthening India’s preparation for the upcoming mega-event. Suryakumar explained the team’s decision to shift Sanju Samson down the order:
“When Shubman returned, he took the opening slot based on prior performances. Sanju has been flexible, batting anywhere from three to six, which is great for us. Flexibility is key for all batters beyond the openers.”
Suryakumar added that having versatile players like Pandya and Gill is a “good headache” for the team, giving India options across the batting and bowling line-up.
Gill emphasised the team’s philosophy: there are no fixed batting positions in the T20I side. “All batters from three to seven can bat anywhere depending on the situation. For example, Tilak Verma might bat at six, Shivam Dube can bat at three. Flexibility is vital, and this squad looks strong and well-prepared,” he said.
