Tuesday evening in Kolkata belonged to Andre Russell. At Knights Unplugged, KKR's high-energy preseason event attended by the entire 2026 squad and thousands of fans, the franchise made an announcement that stopped the room. The No. 12 jersey, the number Russell wore through a decade of destruction, loyalty and championship cricket, has been retired. No future Knight will ever wear it again.
What the moment meant for Andre Russell and KKR
KKR CEO Venky Mysore walked onto the stage holding a specially framed memento of the purple and gold kit. "In your honour, we would like to retire this number for KKR," he said.
It is the first time an IPL franchise has officially retired a player's jersey number, a gesture that puts Russell in the company of the very few cricketers in history who have been honoured this way, comparable in significance to the respect the BCCI showed Sachin Tendulkar with number 10 and MS Dhoni with number 7.
For a league defined by auctions, trades and constantly rotating rosters, retiring a number is a statement that cuts through all of that. It says this player was not a temporary asset. He was a permanent part of the architecture.
Russell was visibly moved watching a montage of his decade-long journey. The numbers that journey produced are staggering, 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18 and 123 wickets across his KKR career.
He was the catalyst for the 2014 title and a central figure in the 2024 championship run. "I got a bit emotional watching that video," he told the crowd. "It's been over a decade of amazing achievements, having been part of two title-winning teams. To see what it meant to everyone... that's a different enjoyment. World Cups feel special. When you win the IPL, it's something different. The last one we won, I got teary-eyed."
He had made clear before last year's auction that if he was not playing for KKR he would not be playing in the IPL at all, and he meant it. "When you have left everything on the field, you don't regret walking away from the game," he said. "Every game I played, I played like it was the last game of my IPL career."

What comes next for Russell and KKR
Russell has not left the franchise, he has simply changed his role within it. He joins KKR's backroom staff as Power Coach, a position created specifically for him with the brief of sharpening the finishing skills of the next generation of KKR batters.
He will work alongside head coach Abhishek Nayar and assistant coach Shane Watson. "I have no regrets about being in this role. I am excited," he said. "We have one of the youngest and very talented coaching staff. I would love to be a part of a coaching staff like this. It makes my job easier. I hope whatever knowledge I bring to the table can make their job easier."
KKR also announced Rinku Singh as vice-captain for the 2026 season, with Ajinkya Rahane leading the side as they look to bounce back after finishing eighth last season. They open their campaign against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
