NEW DELHI: West Indies emerged victorious in a tense Super Over against Bangladesh on Tuesday, leveling the three-match ODI series at 1-1.

Both teams finished on 213-9 after a spin-dominated encounter, with 92 of the 100 overs bowled by spinners — the highest in ODI history. West Indies bowled spinners for the full 50 overs, setting a new record, while Mustafizur Rahman was the only pacer to bowl eight overs for Bangladesh.

It was also Bangladesh’s first-ever tied game across formats in 813 matches.

However, the hosts faltered in the Super Over while chasing 11 runs. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, despite some early wayward deliveries, picked up Soumya Sarkar and defended the total to keep West Indies alive in the series.

Captain Shai Hope was crucial throughout, hitting an important boundary in the Super Over and earlier remaining unbeaten on 53, including four boundaries, to help secure the tie.

Bangladesh’s leg-spinner Rishad Hossain, fresh from his 6-35, once again troubled the West Indies batting line-up, finishing with 3-42. Nasum Ahmed dismissed Brandon King for a duck in the first over, and Rishad removed Alick Athanaze (28) and Keacy Carty (35) in quick succession.

Tanvir Islam then joined the attack, dismantling the middle order alongside Rishad and Nasum, leaving West Indies at 133-7. Hope and Justin Greaves added 44 runs for the eighth wicket, but Greaves’ run out for 26 restored Bangladesh’s advantage.

In a dramatic finish, Saif Hassan dismissed Akeal with the penultimate delivery, leaving West Indies needing three runs off the last ball. Khary Pierre managed two runs after a dropped catch by wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan, forcing a Super Over.

The series-deciding third ODI will take place on Thursday.
