India all-rounder Shivam Dube has revealed that the team’s mindset shifted dramatically after their heavy defeat to the South Africa national cricket team in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
India had cruised through the early part of the tournament unbeaten under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. However, their campaign suffered a major jolt when the Proteas handed them a crushing 76-run defeat in the Super 8 stage. The loss suddenly put India under pressure, forcing them to win their remaining two matches to secure a place in the semi-finals.
Rather than denting their confidence, the setback proved to be a wake-up call for the team.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Dube said the defeat sparked a transformation within the squad and ultimately brought out their best performance in the tournament’s final stages.
“I feel that everyone is a match-winner. No one on the side can win you games. We had different performers in each game. Someone always stood up when needed,” Dube said.
The left-hander added that the team collectively raised its intensity after the loss and returned as a far stronger unit.
“As a team, we peaked after the loss against South Africa. Before that game, we were playing well, but we all pulled up our socks after that. We were a completely different team, and our best came in the final.”

Dube himself emerged as one of India’s most reliable performers with the bat during the tournament. Batting in the middle order, he amassed 235 runs in eight innings, striking 15 fours and 17 sixes, often rescuing India from difficult situations.
Despite the pressure that comes with a power-hitting role in the middle overs, the all-rounder insisted that he always trusted his preparation and remained clear about the team’s expectations.
“I always had the confidence and just backed myself. I had worked hard on it. There was clarity in what the team wanted from me. I didn’t promise anything to myself; the goal was simply to win the World Cup at home.”
His fearless approach ultimately played a key role in India’s triumphant campaign in the tournament.
