NEW DELHI: Anticipation around the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final is already building as India prepare to take on New Zealand while defending their crown in the shortest format of the game.
However, there is an unwanted pattern that continues to worry Indian fans whenever an ICC final is played on a Sunday. India have never won an ICC final held on a Sunday.
Interestingly the team has lifted ICC trophies when the final was played on other days. But whenever the summit clash has fallen on a Sunday it has ended in heartbreak for India.

A trend started a long ago
The trend first began 23 years ago in 2003 when India lost the ICC ODI World Cup final to Australia. That defeat came after a brilliant tournament run but the final turned into a painful night for Indian fans.
The pattern continued in the T20 World Cup 2014 final where favourites India lost to Sri Lanka in one of the most frustrating finishes for a team.
The latest example came in the 2023 ODI World Cup final when India were dominant throughout the tournament but could not lift the trophy after losing to Australia on another Sunday. The Travis Head show that night once again left Indian fans stunned.
