Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have strategically added David Payne to their team ahead of the IPL 2026. The left-arm seamer is an injury replacement for Jack Edwards, who has been sidelined, leaving the franchise to rearrange its resources before a critical period.
The 35-year-old David Payne is a former international cricketer of England who comes with a rich experience in T20. With 233 T20 matches and 304 wickets, which is a phenomenal achievement, he is reliable, and the ball can be controlled in his hands.
SRH have already incorporated his services at Rs 1.5 crore, which indicates the desire to reinforce their bowling department with a proven player.
David Payne, a timely boost for SRH’s bowling attack
David Payne's would be crucial to Sunrisers Hyderabad. Injuries usually cause an imbalance in a team in the middle of the season, and the replacement of Edwards by an experienced campaigner such as Payne would cause minimal disturbances. His capability of playing in various stages of the innings, particularly in the powerplay and in death overs, adds variety to the speed of SRH.

Further, David Payne has been consistent in franchising cricket between leagues and thus is reliable when the pressure is high. Although he is not a superstar who will be on the headlines, his figures will be a testimony to his efficiency, as something SRH will be counting on as the tournament unfolds.
Sunrisers Hyderabad are without their captain Pat Cummins in the early stages of the tournament. Jack Edwards' injury further weakened their pace bowling attack, which includes experienced fast bowlers Braydon Carse, Harshal Patel, and Jaydev Unadkat.
The rotation also emphasises the growing significance of the depth of the squad in the IPL, as a team needs to be agile and responsive because of any injury. Payne is now in the picture, and SRH will hope to keep the momentum going and remain competitive in what would be an otherwise highly competitive season.
