Desert Vipers have been forced into an untimely reshuffle at a crucial stage of the ILT20 season, with Shimron Hetmyer ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The setback comes just as the Vipers were gathering momentum at the business end of the competition.
The injury was sustained during Desert Vipers’ recent clash against Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, prompting the franchise to act swiftly. England opener Jason Roy has been named as Hetmyer’s replacement — a move that preserves the team’s firepower, even if the disruption comes at an awkward time.
Hetmyer featured in all seven matches for the Vipers this season but struggled to find consistency. He scored 111 runs in six innings at an average of 18.50, though his strike rate of 160.86 reflected his intent to accelerate in the middle order. His standout performance came against ADKR on December 5, when he blasted 48 off 25 balls — a knock that, in hindsight, proved to be his final contribution this season.
Jason Roy brings experience and form
Jason Roy steps in with recent game time and familiarity with subcontinent conditions. The England batter arrives fresh from a stint with Pokhara Avengers in the Nepal Premier League, where he scored 68 runs in three matches at an average of 34. Prior to that, Roy captained Royal Champs in the Abu Dhabi T10, keeping himself match-ready.
Roy also brings valuable ILT20 experience. He featured in two games for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in 2024 before enjoying a productive campaign with Sharjah Warriorz, amassing 298 runs in 12 matches at an average close to 30. With proven pedigree and immediate availability, Roy offers Desert Vipers a steady replacement as they push for the title.
