There is no indication that the instability in Pakistan cricket is going to slow down. The Pakistani cricket board (PCB) is supposedly angry with the current ODI captain, Mohammad Rizwan, after the team's poor performance in the Champions Trophy. Pakistan's early exit from the tournament and the 2027 World Cup coming up have led the PCB to consider drastic changes, and Rizwan may be the first to go.

Shaheen Afridi has been reported as the leading candidate to take over the role of captain in the One Day International format for Pakistan, replacing Rizwan. Reports from Ejaz Wasim Bakri of BBN Sports state that Afridi has already taken over the throne of captaincy. The latter, who was appointed after Babar Azam's resignation, has not been very impressive in his captaincy so far. The home Champions Trophy ended up being the last straw when the team was knocked out, suffering a defeat to India as well, thus deciding his fate.

Shaheen's road to leadership has been quite tumultuous. Halting after just one series, the PCB brought Babar back as captain. In the meantime, as it may be said, Shaheen has been a bright star in the PSL.

Reports from Pakistani media indicate that the top-order batter is still considered one of the mainstays of the lineup. Even if he is removed from leadership, Rizwan will be the one to keep Pakistan's batting lineup strong and thus only respond with a bat performance.
