India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who has been in the headlines following his Chennai Super Kings trade and omission from the South Africa ODI squad, is currently leading Kerala in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025.

While his T20I selection remains under scrutiny, Samson’s performance against Odisha on November 26 raised further questions.

Odisha posted a competitive total of 177, but Kerala chased it down comfortably with 21 balls to spare. Sanju Samson, opening alongside Rohan Kunnummal, scored a measured 51 off 41 balls at a strike rate of 124.39, hitting six boundaries and one six.

However, it was Rohan Kunnummal who dominated the innings with a spectacular 121 off just 60 deliveries, smashing 10 boundaries and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 201.66. While Kerala achieved a convincing win, Samson’s cautious approach stood out, especially in the context of T20 standards.

Samson’s innings, though steady, could influence his T20I prospects for India’s tour of South Africa starting December 9. It also adds to the scrutiny surrounding his role as Chennai Super Kings’ primary wicketkeeper-batter for IPL 2026, following his high-profile trade involving Ravindra Jadeja.

Kerala’s bowling attack restricted Odisha effectively, with MD Nidheesh taking four wickets, KM Asif claiming two, and Ankit Sharma picking up one. Despite the win, Samson’s batting approach will continue to be closely monitored as he leads Kerala in the ongoing SMAT 2025 campaign.
