Ruturaj Gaikwad has achieved a landmark moment in his career by scoring his maiden ODI century for India during the second match of the India vs South Africa series. While he had previously notched up centuries for India A, this knock stands out as his first-ever three-figure score at the senior international level.
The 28-year-old reached the milestone in just 77 balls at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in New Raipur, showcasing superb stroke play with 12 boundaries and 2 sixes. He then got a bear hug from Virat Kohli, acknowledging his milestone. To celebrate his century, he removed his helmet and raised his bat, and soaked into the cheers and applause of the crowd.

Gaikwad also batted at No. 4 in the series opener, but could manage only 8 runs. Following his failure in Ranchi, several fans and experts questioned his place in the lineup at that position. However, with his composed and timely knock in the second ODI, he responded in the best way possible, silencing all doubts around his selection.
Gaikwad now has the second-fastest ODI hundred for India vs South Africa (77 balls), only behind Yusuf Pathan, who'd got there in 68 balls in Centurion in 2011.
Batting on a tricky Raipur surface that tested timing and temperament, Gaikwad created a crucial 150-run partnership with Virat Kohli , one that would further extend his record as the highest century-maker in the format. The duo’s partnership has set a solid platform and guided India towards a strong total on a batting-friendly surface.
With the Proteas having chased down 350 in Ranchi during the series opener, India will aim to post a target well beyond 300 this time. A win today will also secure the series for India, providing a much-needed boost after their recent 2-1 ODI loss to Australia and a 2-0 Test defeat to South Africa at home.
