Rohit Sharma said that their recent ICC victories have been because of the strong foundations laid while Rahul Dravid was the coach, stressing that the strength of collective belief and a long-term vision were what drew the team to success. Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Rating awards on Tuesday, Rohit reflected on India's resurgence post the heartbreak of losing the 2023 ODI World Cup final to come back, winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.
“It's not about one or two years of work — it’s been a journey of many years,” Rohit said, receiving a memento for India’s Champions Trophy win. “We had come close so many times, but couldn’t cross the line. That’s when we decided to do something different, and everyone bought into that idea.”
The India captain revealed that the team’s philosophy during both ICC tournaments revolved around discipline, consistency, and mental toughness. “All the players got into the mindset of challenging themselves, avoiding complacency, and not taking anything for granted,” he explained. “Once we won a game, we immediately moved on to the next — that approach helped us maintain focus throughout.”
Rohit also credited Dravid for fostering a culture of trust and accountability. Though Gautam Gambhir replaced Dravid as head coach before the Champions Trophy, Rohit said the foundation built under Dravid’s guidance remained central to their success. “The process we began with Rahul bhai continued into the Champions Trophy. Everyone enjoyed that journey,” he said.

Looking forward to India's tour of Australia, to be held under the leadership of Shubman Gill, he shared: "I have always taken pride in performing in the three formats, and the team picked up on that attitude." Prior to this, Mr. Sharma had been replaced as captain for ODIs and Test matches.
Rohit, who will travel alongside Virat Kohli for the three-match ODI series beginning October 19, acknowledged the challenge of facing Australia on their home turf. “It’s always tough playing there, but I love it,” he said. “We know what to expect, and hopefully, we can get the result in our favour.”
