Even as Mumbai battled Himachal Pradesh in their Ranji Trophy fixture, a familiar presence drew attention at the Sharad Pawar Bandra-Kurla Complex on Saturday. Former India captain Rohit Sharma was spotted training during the lunch break on Day 1, working quietly behind the scenes while the Mumbai bowlers went through their drills under Dhawal Kulkarni’s supervision.
Wearing a blue shirt, shorts, and a black cap, the 38-year-old was seen doing light sprints and fitness drills just outside the nets on a warm Mumbai afternoon. While his long-time mentor Abhishek Nayar was absent, Sharma appeared focused on his individual routine as he gears up for his return to international cricket.
The veteran opener is expected to feature next in the three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30 in Ranchi. His last appearance for India came during the Australia tour, where he struck an unbeaten 121 in Sydney to guide India to a nine-wicket win. Earlier this year, Sharma played a pivotal role in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, scoring 76 in the final against New Zealand to clinch the Player of the Match award.
Rohit, who retired from Test cricket in May and from T20Is after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, last represented Mumbai in first-class cricket against Jammu & Kashmir in January. His quiet return to training hints at another focused comeback in the 50-over format.
