He also mentioned that he took a day off before the match, emphasising the importance of recovery as he gets older. With rumours circulating that the BCCI has urged him to reconsider his Test retirement, Kohli subtly dropped a line that many felt carried a hint about his future. “I’m 37 and need time for recovery. That’s how it’s always going to be — I’m just playing one form of the game.” The statement stood out at a time when chatter suggests that the board has encouraged him to rethink his Test retirement. Kohli on staying sharp and one format Kohli spoke at length about the shift in his preparation style. He stressed that his readiness now comes from clarity, rhythm and awareness rather than extended sessions. “I’ve never been a believer of preparation. All my preparation is mental. As long as my physical levels are up and the mental sharpness is there, then you know it’s fine.” Settling into the innings Reflecting on his time at the crease, Kohli said the pitch was good for the first 20 to 25 overs before it began to slow down. For him, the key was staying relaxed and letting experience guide his choices. “Of course when you get a start, you get into the situation, you know what needs to be done. The experience kicks in.”
