Rawalpindi Pindiz have confirmed a replacement for Laurie Evans whose withdrawal from PSL 2026 was announced without explanation. Pindiz posted on social media confirming the change but gave no reason for Evans' unavailability.

The PSL begins on March 26 and Pindiz play their first match on March 28 against Peshawar Zalmi in an afternoon game in Lahore. Evans is the latest in a series of latedepartures that have reshaped several PSL 2026 squads in the days before the tournament begins.

PSL 2026: Who is Laurie Evans' replacement and what he brings to Rawalpindi Pindiz

Laurie Evans’ replacement Usman Khawaja is 39 years old and recently retired from international cricket during the Ashes earlier this year bringing an end to one of the more distinguished batting careers Australian cricket has produced in recent decades.

He has not stopped playing entirely. He turned out for Brisbane Heat in the BBL scoring 108 runs at a strike rate of nearly 148 in three innings and played Sheffield Shield cricket for Queensland, which marked the end of his first-class career.

His last major franchise cricket appearance before this PSL stint was also in Pakistan. He played for Islamabad United in the 2021 PSL season and had an outstanding campaign, scoring 246 runs in seven innings at an average of 49.20 and a strike rate of 152.79.

That included an unbeaten century of 105 against Peshawar Zalmi when United posted 247, the highest PSL total at the time. United finished top of the table that year before losing in the second eliminator to Zalmi.

He now joins a different franchise and could open the batting alongside his captain Mohammad Rizwan which would be one of the more experienced opening partnerships in the competition.

The broader pattern of late withdrawals reshaping PSL 2026

Evans' departure continues a trend that has defined the PSL 2026 build-up. Jake Fraser-McGurk had already withdrawn from the Pindiz squad for personal reasons and was replaced by New Zealand's Cole McConchie.

Dasun Shanaka pulled out of Lahore Qalandars after being offered an IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals. Blessing Muzarabani withdrew from Islamabad United for the same reason, taking up a replacement signing with Kolkata Knight Riders.

The concurrent scheduling of the PSL and IPL has created a situation where players who become available for IPL contracts mid-window are choosing the richer league and PSL franchises are managing the consequences with days to go before their campaigns begin.

At Islamabad United there is also a change to report. Offspinner Chris Green replaces Max Bryant who has been ruled out of the tournament with injury. Bryant had played five games for Peshawar Zalmi last season before being picked up by United for PKR 1.95 crore ahead of this edition. Green has PSL experience having been part of five games for Multan Sultans in 2019.

The PSL 2026 and its unusual circumstances due to conflict in West Asia

PSL 2026 begins on March 26 with Lahore Qalandars hosting Hyderabad Kingsmen in the opening game. The first 14 matches of the tournament will be played in Lahore before the action moves to Karachi.

The tournament is being played behind closed doors this edition due to the lack of resources resulting from the ongoing conflict in West Asia which has disrupted travel, airline hubs and logistics across the region.

It is an unusual backdrop for a tournament that in normal circumstances draws large crowds and significant broadcast attention.

Pindiz, one of the two new franchises making their PSL debut this season, begin their campaign on March 28 and will do so with Khawaja at the top of the order rather than Evans. Given what Khawaja did the last time he played in Pakistan's biggest franchise tournament that is not the worst problem for a new franchise to have.
