Sunrisers Eastern Cape find themselves in familiar territory once again. For the fourth consecutive season, the franchise has booked a place in the SA20 playoffs, underlining its status as the league’s most consistent and successful side. With two titles and a runner-up finish already to their name, the Sunrisers now face a resurgent Pretoria Capitals in Qualifier 1 in Durban on Wednesday.

Despite their dominant run, captain Tristan Stubbs is refusing to read too much into past success. Having taken over the leadership role from Aiden Markram ahead of Season 4, Stubbs insists that playoff cricket resets everything.

“It doesn’t mean much,” Stubbs said on the eve of the clash. “It’s good to know we played well through the season, but once you get to the playoffs, every game starts at 0 for 0. Momentum is nice, but it doesn’t guarantee anything.”

Asked whether Sunrisers’ strong playoff record gives them an edge, Stubbs was quick to dismiss the notion. “Not really. Having players who’ve been in these situations helps, but it’s still a game of cricket. Experience doesn’t count if you don’t perform on the day.”

A key factor behind Sunrisers finishing atop the standings has been the sparkling form of Quinton de Kock. The former South Africa opener has piled up 328 runs in eight innings at an average of 46.85, providing consistent starts at the top.

“Quinton has been outstanding for us,” Stubbs said. “Everyone has contributed as a team, and that’s what helped us get into the playoffs.”

Pretoria Capitals, however, arrive with threats of their own. Sherfane Rutherford, who sits third on the tournament’s run charts, has amassed 317 runs at a staggering average of 79.25.

“He’s been very good for them,” Stubbs acknowledged. “They’ve earned their place in the top two. But again, in the playoffs, it’s nought for nought. You’ve got to turn up and play well on the day.”

The stakes could not be higher. The winner of Qualifier 1 will secure a direct berth in the Betway SA20 Season 4 final at Newlands on Sunday, January 25. The losing side will get a second chance in Qualifier 2 on Friday, January 23 at the Wanderers, facing the winner of the Eliminator between Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings at Centurion.
